What
makes them work?
Light is generated by a chemical reaction
called “chemiluminescence”.
Typical glow sticks as chemical reactants use: a
hydrogen peroxide solution
(which is called the "activator") and a solution of
phenyl oxalate ester and a fluorescent dye (which makes the colour). The activator is stored in a
thin glass capsule (comp. B on the diagram above). When the glass capsule is
broken (by flexing a glow stick) the activator is released, and mixing the
components (shaking the glow stick) initiates the reaction. Depending on
components used, the chemical reaction can last (glow sticks can glow) from a
few minutes to many hours. Heating the glow sticks (providing extra energy) will
speed up the reaction, what will result in brighter light but will shorten the
glow time. The reaction will slow down in low temperatures (the light will dim,
but the glow time will be longer).
How to
activate them?
To
activate:
a.
bend (to break the internal glass capsule)
b.
shake (until
it
glows evenly)
do not
bend activated glow sticks any more; excessive bending may break the plastic
tube
what will result in leakage
How long do they last?
The glow sticks we supply will glow from
6
to 12 hours
depending on size,
colour and type.
How to
turn them off?
They can
not be turned off once activated.
Does temperature affect the
glow time?
Yes, it does. Higher temperatures will make glow stick
glow brighter
but will shorten the glow time.
Lower temperatures do the opposite. Changes of
temperature between 15 - 28 C do not
produce significant variation in
glow time.
Can they be re-charged after they stop glowing?
No, there is no way of re-charging or re-activating.
Once the process of glowing comes to an end, light stickshould be disposed of.
Are they waterproof?
Yes, light sticks are
waterproof and can be used
underwater for night diving, surfing
or pool parties.
How to store light sticks?
Chemical components of
glow sticks are sensitive to light and humidity, therefore glow
sticks should be stored
in original undamaged factory packaging. Prolonged exposure to light and
humidity will shorten glow time or
can make glow sticks totally inactive.
What
is the shelf life of light sticks?
Light sticks kept in original undamaged packaging have
a shelf life of0.5-2 years
(depending on the type of
product and storage conditions).
Are they
safe?
The
liquid light source is non-toxic, no heat or harmful
radiation is produced.
Please
note
:
the activated
liquid,
even though non-toxic,
may contain tiny
shards
of glass
which may cause injury should the light stick
be
punctured or split open. The liquid can permanently
stain clothing or
furniture and
can cause skin or eye irritation. Some light stick products may contain small elements, posing choking hazards.

Light sticks are not suitable for children under 5 years of age.
Do not puncture or split open.
Do
not ingest the glow fluid |
